Udu!
My next search was to find an authentic percussion ensemble (not an American university) performing on world percussion instruments.
African Percussion Ensemble!
So I don't limit my perusing entirely to percussion instruments, I decided that the Native American pictures I found would be of costumes and dances. The colors in each of these costumes is quite beautiful and certainly eye catching.

I really love the pictures of the costumes... they are really beautiful when in motion. The udu drum video is awesome. I don't really know much about percussion instruments because I hardly ever play them, being a vocalist. It's really neat to learn more about intruments that aren't your own. Thanks! Just out of curiosity, does the glaze make a difference in the sound of the drum or is it just the shape and quality of the clay?
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the udu video. While I was watching it, I realized that the udu, like other African instruments, has more than one sound. You hear the hands slapping the pottery, but there is also the deeper bass tone.
ReplyDeleteThe Udu (or it's Eastern counterpart) is the drum I was searching for when I ended up buying the Tabla. I first heard it in some ragas and really liked its metallic timbre. It almost sounds like a harmonic on a stringed instrument. I thought if a percussion instrument can sound like that, I want it because that's cool. Well, I got the wrong thing, but now I know what I need to get. I like that this video really shows how two different sounds (smack and ring) come from the instrument.
